Our Party BlogHave your say about all things democraticJuly 1, 2008GREG BECK DEMOSTRATED HE IS MOST REALISTIC CHOICE AT SETPAC LAST NIGHT
Hamilton County Democratic sheriff nominee Greg Beck demonstrated why he would be the most realistic sheriff among five candidates at the SETPAC forum last night. The forum was held at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. When asked about crime in the area, all the candidates agreed that crime was a problem except for Republican candidate Jim Hammond. It has become very clear that the Republican sheriff candidate is out of touch with our community. Not so with the other four candidates for sheriff. But there is only one sheriff candidate, Greg Beck, who has a five-point plan to deal with our crime problem, growing gang problem, and lack of confidence in the sheriff's department. Greg Beck believes we must restore confidence in our sheriff's department, respect the unionization of our sheriff deputies, keep SROs in some of the schools, fix our jail and do all of this in a tight fiscally responsible way. Greg Beck is a practical realist who knows that there have been almost 100 gangs identified locally. He believes we must continue to identify area gangs, but separate those that terrorize our citizens and treat them as such. Let's make sure we get a sheriff who has real experience (Greg was officer of the year in 2003) and has a REAL plan for our community (see more at Greg's Campaign Website). This post has 5 replies... What is the five point plan from Greg Beck, can you post details here??? Why not have SROs in all schools? How will he fix our jails? How will he do all of this in a tight fiscal way? What about Jim Hammond, I was at a forum in lookout valley and I am wondering about his ethics. I heard he was "friends" will Billy Long, and that there was rampant corrpution while he was chief deputy. I read in the Chattonoogan.com, that Jim Hammond was a spender, that someone called him Cadillac Jim Hammond for his spending while he was Chief deputy. I also read that jim hammond was called a party switcher, that he told democrats that he was always a democrat, but after he lost he became a republican. what is with all of this. This website needs to give us real information. Come on hamdems, get with it. Hamdems leader writes on Chatanoogan Greg Beck can deliver. He has identified serious crime problems and and is ready to deal with them. In fact, Greg Beck has a five-point plan to deal with our crime problem, growing gang problem, and lack of confidence in the sheriff's department. Greg Beck will restore confidence in our sheriff's department, respect the unionization of sheriff deputies, keep SROs in schools, fix our jail overcrowding, and do all of this in a tight fiscally responsible way. What is the five point plan, use this site to let us know come on hamdems. Greg Beck has the experience as an officer who has actually worn the uniform and been "Officer of the Year." He has balanced a $500 million budget and has the executive skills needed to do the job. He will be an advocate for those who protect Hamilton County citizens and will see that our streets are safe. He will assure the highest and best use of resource officers in our schools and has a heart for the children of this country growing up to be upright citizens in a safe school environment free of drugs and violence. The other candidates for sheriff have not actually worn the uniform. Greg has the combination of executive experience, experience as a police officer, and people skills to be the kind of sheriff we need. I'm proud to volunteer in Greg's campaign and will be proud to vote for him and see him sworn in as Sheriff of Hamilton County. Put a sign in your yard and tell all your friends to vote for Greg. Help in any and all ways you can to see this fine candidate elected as our sheriff! I am happy for the "people skills" exhibited by Greg Beck. When he speaks about the ultimate responsibility being on the parents of children in our schools, he is correct. Children should come to school prepared and ready to learn because their parents prepared them and gave them a safe place to do their homework, sleep and eat their meals. SROs will always be necessary but the parents must be there as well. VOTE FOR GREG BECK Stuart James: 10 Reasons Why I Support Jim Hammond
I served as Hamilton County Democratic Party Chairman for two years. During my term as chairman, I saw the downfall of one of Chattanooga's greatest politicians, State Senator Ward Crutchfield. I saw other Democrats join him as results of indictments and convictions in the Tennessee Waltz sting - including local politicians Charles Love and William Cotton. I saw local politician, and Republican, Chris Newton go to prison from allegations arising from the Tennessee Waltz. During my term as chairman, I worked with Billy Long to get him elected sheriff. After I left office, I saw Billy Long plead guilty to charges including extortion and money laundering. These charges involved serious crimes against this community. Now that I am finished being Hamilton County Democratic Party chair, I still get criticized for electing people of such "ill repute." I have been affected by all of this, and I have come to my senses, it is obvious to me that Republicans have higher moral standards than Democrats, and it is even more obvious that Republicans elect people with high ethics and Democrats elect people of "ill repute.” I have also learned that Republicans tend to be more patriotic than Democrats, Republicans just are better people. On this Fourth of July weekend, all of this got me thinking — maybe I should just vote Republican. Maybe I should begin voting Republican in the election of the next Hamilton County Sheriff. After all I am proud of my country - Jim Hammond worked in Iraq, and what better way to proclaim my pride than to give my support to a proud and honest American – Jim Hammond. With this change of heart, I have decided that I need to give my 10 reasons for supporting Jim Hammond, a Republican, for Sheriff. In so doing, I hope amend the errors of my ways. So, on this Fourth of July weekend I am voicing my pride in a great American and law enforcement official by giving my 10 reasons for supporting Jim Hammond, a Republican, for Hamilton County Sheriff: 10. During his term as chief deputy of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, Jim Hammond knew and was friends with Billy Long. 9. Jim Hammond knew and was friends with Lonnie Hood, Mr. Hood was convicted of money laundering and extortion. Mr. Hood gave $1000.00 to Hammond’s campaign for Sheriff. 8. Jim Hammond ran for Sheriff twice, as a Democrat. He lost both times. 7. After losing his races for Sheriff, Jim Hammond told Democrats that he always has been and always will be a Democrat. 6. Eddie Newell, a Democrat who ran against Jim Hammond for the Democratic nomination in 1994, endorsed Republican John Cupp. 5. Jim Hammond, responding to Mr. Newell's endorsement of Mr. Cupp, said "he [Hammond] does not believe Newell's endorsement will be a major factor in the upcoming race but added that it probably will hurt Newell's political future. If he is still interested in politics, that's not a very good way to show it, flipping back and forth between parties, we used to call people like that mugwumps where I come from." 4. Jim Hammond, after he lost both races for Sheriff as a Democrat, switched to the Republican Party. Mugwump Jim if he loses again may join Bob Barr in the Libertarian Party. 3. Jim Hammond, while he was chief deputy, presided over a department that ultimately had a federal investigation resulting in 16 indictments, nine guilty pleas with charges ranging from extortion and money laundering to steroid distribution. Lee Anderson, of the Chattanooga Times, could not endorse Jim Hammond because of this ethical record. 2. Jim Hammond is a fiscal conservative who loved to spend your money while he was chief deputy. County Mayor Dalton Roberts and County Commissioner Curtis Adams brought up issues surrounding Hammond's management of the department, particularly spending. Dalton Roberts gave Jim Hammond the name Cadillac Jim for his extravagant spending of your tax dollars. 1. Cadillac Jim after losing to Sheriff John Cupp said “John stomped me. People pretty much accepted that I was part of a corrupt administration and that John could be trusted…my opponent [Cupp] was very effective in making Jim Hammond look corrupt and that hurt me.” Maybe, Cadillac Jim, the truth hurts. By the way, I am proud of my service to the local Democratic Party as its Chair, and proud to have worked with such people as Harold Ford Jr. and Governor Phil Bredesen.
