Our Party BlogHave your say about all things democraticAugust 16, 2008SENATOR ANDY BERKE ASKS, "ARE KIDS READY TO LEARN?"Are our kids going to school ready to learn? As Secretary of the Education Committee, I have seen the immense resources and dedication we have put into Pre-K. This valuable commitment will yield long-term benefits. This past year, though, I asked the Secretary of State to designate some funds for a study, conducted by the Community Research Council, on school readiness for kids. Disturbingly, this study found that one out of four Hamilton County children are at risk for not being ready to learn. You can read about the study here. I hope you will help me consider ways to ensure that we focus our efforts on the services and circumstances that will produce results. As the study notes, "While a number of efforts have proven successful in overcoming early year deficits, how a child performs in those early years often determines how they will perform throughout their academic life." In thinking about our educational future, we should continue to examine these important early years. Post a Reply...
