Our Party BlogHave your say about all things democraticJuly 31, 2008TODAY'S TIMES FREE PRESS: HAMMOND CONTINUES TO SHOW POOR ETHICAL JUDGMENT IN LONNIE HOOD CASE
In a Chattanooga Times Free Press article today, questions again swirl around Jim Hammond's poor judgment concerning his relationship with formerly convicted felon and corrupt cop Lonnie Hood. While Hammond claims that Hood is only a volunteer on his campaign team, Hammond insists that his relationship with Lonnie Hood has nothing to do with the way he will run a sheriff's department.Voters beg to differ. Voters will agree with Greg Beck, Democratic sheriff candidate, when he says that the discussion of Hammond and Hood's relationship "is fair game. All of us are up for public scrutiny, and it's as fair as anything else." In fact, not only do voters agree with Beck, so do all the other sheriff candidates. Republican write-in sheriff candidate Fred Fusion says he was "surprised . . . . I don't know why [Hammond] would want to shoot himself in the foot for associating with people like that. I am a Christian and I understand the importance of forgiveness, but if I knew somebody - even a relative - who was a convicted felon, I wouldn't want them anywhere near my campaign." Independent sheriff candidate Tim Akins says that the issue of Hood and Hammond sticking together is about birds of a feather flocking together: "You can tell a lot about a person by the people he hangs out with." Independent sheriff candidate Jim Winters says that Hammond's relationship with Hood is essential to understanding Hammond: "I think people are a product of their environment. Who he takes money from, who he's got supporting him, it has an effect in my eyes." If we are to have integrity and honesty in our sheriff's department from now on, we must reject candidates (like Hammond) who show poor ethical and poor professional judgment. And we must elect someone with both leadership skills and sense of right and wrong. That person is Greg Beck. Vote today and tomorrow for Beck during early voting. Election Day is Thursday, August 7.
